The Mississippi River Voyage (MRV) is a fundraising event being planned by the Water For People (WFP) Committee of the Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA). MRV will start in Minnesota’s Lake Itasca, the headwaters of the Mississippi River. It will end in Louisiana at the Gulf of Mexico. Supporters will be able to log into a dedicated webpage to see a detailed breadcrumb trail of the voyage. The voyage will begin on July 19, 2014 and end ten weeks later on September 27 at WEFTEC in... New Orleans. Daily reports, photos, and video of the voyage will be available on the WFP website. The kayakers will be Gary and Linda De Kock from Grand Rapids, MI. They will be joined from time to time by friends, family, and WFP supporters from the ten states that border the river. The goal of the voyage is to raise $5.00 for each of the 2291 miles in the Mississippi River. If a total of $11,455.00 or more can be raised by May 31, 2014, the trip will go as planned. The voyage is self-funded by the participants, so 100% of every gift goes to WFP. The voyage will be made in an Aleut Sea II kayak (length 22 feet, width 26 inches) made by Valley Sea Kayaks in Nottingham, England. The paddles are carbon fiber, straight or bent shaft models from Werner Paddles in Sultan, Washington. The schedule requires that, on average, 33 miles must be covered each day for 70 days. Most nights will be spent camping on the river’s banks or countless islands. See you on the river!moreless
